ScratchTools - the ultimate ScratchLIVE Crate/Library Tool ;)

Hey ya, maybe some of you are interested...I am working on a tool which should help us SSL users, making life easiers with a couple of functions which SSL does not have right now.

Right now it is a commandline tool written in java, but we are working on a GUI. I have tested it on my Mac, worked fine last week, but I fear with all the big changes in the last week I might have broken the compatibility - but it will be fixed in the next few days.

vidoona, that's the reason I wrote it. The good thing about the commandline is you can actually write a batch script which will do all the sync'ing etc. then starte SSL. So everytime instad of starting SSL, you star the script, it do all the crate/database start and then start SSL automatically.

I haven't been big into batch script writing since the dos days. I've got a lot of programming experience, so I'd like to take a look at the code and do some error checking to get this thing out of alpha.

No offense Sam & Serato, but this little tool is up there with pitch lock and looping from a practicality standpoint : ) I love you guys, but I curse your name every Sunday as I find myself spending way too much time doing tedious mp3 sorting and naming operations that could easily be programmed (as Nik has shown).

Well I put a lot of work into it, so it was not "that" easy. But some of the functions are so "exotic" that I don't think they will (or should) make it ever into the ScratchLIVE core application. It was foreseeable some of the functions will be added at some time (like add crates with folders as subcrates, which has been confirmed by the Serato team), but with the exotic functions (regular expressions is something only a few people will actually use or even know how to use)... nah. But they make life a lot easier - at least for me.

disturbed, advantage of the commandline is, you dont have to click thousands of buttons if you want to perform the same tasks each time before you start SSL. Just put all commands into a batch file. Double click on the batch file - done. No worries aboujs dsylfekxia. ;)

Damn, just posted about something to do the same thing. I can test and look over code. I am really a c++ programmer, but I can work with java also. The command line is great for me. I can write a script to do what i want. I hate all that pointing and clicking.

BTW, props to radish (friendly, supportive guy on the forum) who coded a similar tool. It was working until SSL version 1.4. (check www.scratchlive.net <- click).

One issue Im having is with "--sync-subcrates"

If the folder has more than one subfolder like
Crate: New
Folder: New\May\week1

..it will freeze SSL on loadup. If the folder only has 1 subfolder level SSL will load fine, but if it goes more than 1 level deep it freezes.

yuri, I think this is a SSL flaw, I get this bug w/o using ScratchTools as well. Check for a "order.pref" file (on c: and other drives) and delete it. IT should fix the problem, lemme know if not.

Konix, it already exports it to a text file in csv format. You can rename the files to .csb or directly load them into Excel.

This is added otherwise SSL will delete crates without any other track. You can safely delete it.

Uhm, well it'S pretty easy if you've read the manual, go to all-crate, click on first column, then it will sort and you can easily delete all missing tracks in one go. However yuri is a lazy mf, he requested the function ;)

mex, 1. is on the list, 2. not sure what you mean... iTunes to crates, or crates to iTunes? Latter is not possible, b/c iTunes has its own format, the XML file from iTunes itself is not used by iTunes (only for exporting, not for importing).

Yeah I was hoping there would be a way to go from crates -> itunes.

On the to-do list is also iTunes -> crates.

here is the small batch file im currently using. All you do is open up notepad and put this stuff in it. Then save it and rename the extension from filename.txt to filename.bat

There are 6 lines total. Line 1 deletes orphaned files. Line 2 Syncs my new mp3 folder and subfolders to a crate named "new". Line 3 deletes any known missing (?) file. Line 4 is just a pause in the script so that I can see if anything failed, I then press enter. Line 5 and 6 startup serato. I do have some issues with Serato handling the subcrates that are being automatically created. Sometimes it locks up on load.

One thing I noticed is that syncing only adds new files. It doesnt delete moved files does it?? If not it might be a good option to be able to have a function option to delete the crate before creating it again. If this is already in the function let me know.

Also, what does the -Xms512m mean??

Alright seriously. Is there a way to make this into a real app? I know time is money...I'm willing to pay & I'm others on this board would make donations too. Lets say you got $10 from 30 people on this board. I'm sure that would be very easy.

I don't quite understand.

Right now it adds all new tracks from the folders to the crate, it does not touch old tracks. If it is needed I can add an option to sync them in such a way that it is a complete exact representation of the according folder. Personally, I never needed it that way, that'S why I haven't added it.

-Xms512m is a java VM option which gives a start memory (heap) usage of 512m, as the default 64MB is not sufficient in most cases. To be correct, you only need the -Xmx512m option as it means a maximum memory (heap again) size of 512MB.

You mean with a graphical user interface? It's on our list to do, unfortunately Robin (the guy who is responsible for the GUI) is veeery busy right now :( And I know sh** about GUI (and honestly I don'T want to get into it, unless someone is able to give me real quick+easy startup help! :) )

About paying, it's totally up to you if you want to donate some money. Of course as always in life, a donation will be a motivation and will help covering costs (for the website/hosting and the dozens, dozens of hours (it's my first java application...) I put work and time into it). I appreciate it.

However, donation is not mandatory. This is a totally free application, for personal and commercial usage. I was tired of doing the same stuff again and again manually (putting folders into SSL crates by dragging again and again) so I decided to code an app which should help me, and which saves time. Just sharing the result, because I am pretty sure I am not the only one who benefits from this application.

If you don't want to donate, it is fine as well, no one will be mad! Really! You can still use the application. Spread the word :)

to me using a commandline to sync folders isnt easier than the way i just mentioned

one more question -

i have some crates which are my "playlists" and they refer to mp3s in various crates (but really folders on my computer). now if i move some of the files around that the playlists refer to, like say i move "be faithful" from hiphop to party breaks folder, my playlist crate wont know where it is anymore. can your program do anything about that situation?

You can just do it as yuri has described, put it into a batch file, so you just double click on the batch file, it does all the stuff automatically and starts then ScratchLIVE. Easy :)

Wow, this is potentially a cool time-saving app. Will try it soon; should be worth some donating so you should let us know how to do so!

I am still attempting to get a good grasp with how ScratchLive file management. I use a Powerbook G4 with OS X 10.4.9. I have a Lacie 250 GB external drive that I have my archived music saved to.

Bear with me here...this will take some explaining. :-)

On the external, I've made a folder called Crates, where subfolders of albums, compilations, and the like would be located. I would then drag one of the albums to ScratchLive to create a crate.

On my internal drive in the Music folder are recent music files...either purchased, ripped, or sent to me as promos. Because the space on my int drive is low, I usually at some point need to transfer the music to the Crates folder on the external.

My typical, time-consuming dilemma goes like this...

Say I make a crate called Tech House as a subfolder of the Crate folder on the ext drive, and I want to move an mp3 from the int drive to that subfolder. As far as I know, I don't think that ScratchLive has the ability to automatically recognize the new file in the Tech House folder and thus update the crate to reflect it. As it is right now, I'd have to...

1. Move the file into the subfolder.
2. Open ScratchLive.
3. Manually drag the mp3 to the Tech House crate.

This is just for one file, but I'd like the ability to move multiple file into any of the Crate subfolders. Then when ScratchLive is launched, it'll autodetect the new files and update the crates to reflect this. Even better would be if each file would run through the overview function to build the file and analyze via the auto bpm (if checked, of course).

I'm not sure if it would be a function that's already in ScratchLive or ScratchTools, but I thought I'd put it out there.

Again, I'm a bit of an ignoramus and not sure if this already exists. Please advise. Thanks a lot, and again I'll download the tool later cuz it's gonna be hella handy!

SSL can't do it. ScratchTools can do it, *as long* as the files are not move across different partition. This is not really possible as databasefiles are saved 'per partition'. My advise, keep your library on one drive. This simplifies a lot of things, starting from backing up your library to maintaining etc.



After you ran ScratchTools you can start SSL and click on build overviews, it will run only on newly added tracks.

If you have further q's about how to handle your library I would suggest to start a new thread, maybe in the help section. Any ScratchTools related question would be good to see it on the ScratchTools forum.

should be, it runs in java so as long as you have java installed it should work regardless of whether you are using XP, OSX, Vista etc.

danny, I take this as a joke ;) There are some valid reasons why some of the functions probably won't ever make it into ScratchLIVE - cause they are just too special. (Like renaming files with patterns, or exporting a crate as a folder to takeway on a USB stick) Other stuff will hopefully make it soon into ScratchLIVE, so hopefully you don't have to bother with ScratchTools too long ;) Things will be a *lot* easier once the graphical user interface for ScratchTools is ready.

Guides (with screenshots) will be coming later today hopefully. Remember though that you have to do everything in Command Prompt (PC) or Terminal (Mac). There's no GUI (yet), it's all command line based.

Hey nik... once the GUI is all set and it goes final do you plan on charging for the program? I think I speak for most of us when I say that somewhere around $5 USD is a small price to pay for such a time saving program.

Hm, no, right now there are not plans to charge money for the program. It is sort of a contribution to the community. Of course tremendous energy and time has gone into the project so far, and we all know time is money, but I would like everyone to benefit from ScratchTools.

However, if you think it's worth something, and if you like the project and would like to show your appreciation and support - of course we will be happy to receive donations, in any form. this could be some money, free beer, free pizza, new needles, new keyboards, turntables, a new TTM57SL for Robin, vouchers for strip clubs, a new ferrari.. all good ;) A thank you or something is fine as well. Uno request - Can you make your program automatically calculate BPM's for every track thats loaded?. Just like how VirtualDj and Traktor calculate each track BPM automatically on load.

No matter how many SL revisions and promises to fix the feature has not been successful to date.

SSL does alot better job then Traktor does at BPM calculation

sdaasd, maybe I could, but I won't. ScratchTools is for library management. BPM detection - SSL can do it, other apps can do it, so no need for me to re-invent the wheel.

if you've moved your 'my music' folder to your external you must specify the full path to 'my music' versus just using the root of your external.

serato doesn't use the hidden .scratchlive folder on your external if you've moved the windows 'my music' folder to your external.

nah, i've had that setup since day 1. it works just fine.

i can plug my external in any computer. start serato and bam everything is there.

i have a performance laptop, a desktop workstation and a lappy that i take when i'm traveling. i'm able to add new music, tag it, add to various playlists in itunes and build overviews from all 3 just by plugging in my ext.

Nyce, okay, fair enough - if it works, it works. I remember a moderator posting that a moved "my music" folder is not supported officially by ScratchLIVE.

this seems like a very helpful program and I just tried to download it but I can't get it installed. I downloaded the latest Java from the website provided. The one I open the .jar install file, after I accept the agreement, I get this message:

java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Program Files\ScratchTools\script.bat (Access is denied)

Installation failed. How can I fix this and get it installed?

I think you can already do this, simply export a crate with no columns as a text file and rename the text file to *.m3u.

I haven't tried it out... "no columns" means, supply an arbitrary list of columns, so that it only puts out the filenames. Thats what you need for a .m3u file.

Ok, Nik sorry about this, I'm dumb in a way & i'm having a hard time logging in to the scratchtools forum.
How do I rename the text file to *.m3u? When I try & rename it, it says the file name cannot contain certain characters. How do you mean?

if you export a crate to crate.txt then rename it to crate.m3u

* (asterisk) is just nomenclature for a wildcard. This represents any sequence of characters. In this case it means the original filename.

@ nik - I am wondering, can your program read a specific MP3 tag and create crates with the name of that specific MP3 tag?

for instance, is it able to read the 'grouping' tag from *all* the songs in the directory, and create their respective crates using the 'grouping' name as the crate name?

eg. I have 3,000 songs. I have 30 different 'grouping' names for the 'grouping' mp3 tag. I want to create 30 crates. Each crate is sorted by it 'grouping' mp3 tag.

Ultimately, I wouuld like to create crates from iTunes playlists, but if your program can do the above, it will be a good interim solution for me.

Yes and no.

ST can not read the ID3 tags of the files itself, after all the problem Serato had to get their tag reader handle corrupt mp3s correctly I really dont want to go through the same problems. So actually ST will rely on the data SSL has read (makes most sense to me). So if SSL has read the tags, after wards it is quite easy (more or less..) to create crates and sort your files into those crates. Matter of fact this is the next major feature (besides the GUI) we are working on. I call this "intelligent crates" (read here ssl-wiki.help.bootlegs.de <- click). You will be able to choose certain filters, like...

import date
genre
filename
etc. (basically any info which is you see in SSL's library panel, plus maybe a few more if I can read them from the library file, like cue points (not sure if they are stored in the library as well))

So you could define an intelligent crate which has all tracks inside which...

* are not older than 1 month
* are from the "house" genre
* and have "digiwaxx" as a grouping tag.

This is similar to what iTunes does. I am looking forward to "intelligent crates" :) and I hate iTunes (various reasons why...).

I've chosen java b/c of crossplatfomr compatibility. The PC and MAc version use exactly the same code.

hey can you guys help, i'm trying to get ssl to locate the files that i have moved using scratchtools and am experienceing some trouble , have i missed a step or something , here is a screen of the command prompt when i try the command to locate, dont mind the "ava" one i hit some keys by mistake , here is the pic

Please use the ScratchTools forums for help, but the problem probably is you have C:/ with a forward slash, you need to use C:\ with a back slash.

Some of these functions should have been added a long time ago, IMHO, for example syncing crates w/ folders. That was the main reason why I started coding this app. However, some of the special-case-functions should not make it into SSL to keep SSL simple. The functions themselves are already complicated enough to explain - only a few people would use it, therefor benefit from them. The majority will just skip that part of the manual.

Feature suggestion:

I'd like a library sync feature, where it rereads the directory structure of your library, adds new files, deletes ones that aren't found any more, and then deletes any not-found ones from any crates that they were in. Sort of like a combination "find file" and "remove orphaned" feature, but focusing mainly on the library. It doesn't care where files went, it just finds new and deletes old, taking the current version of your hard disk library as "gospel" (for lack of a better term) and forgetting the old one.

I'd like to see this mainly because I have a HUGE library (19,000+ files) but I'm not always playing the same genre, I never know what I'm going to play, and I want to have it available all the time, even if it's not in a crate. I'd like to keep my crates for "most played" rather than "all media" - that's what the library is for ;)

If you need an example of this, Winamp has it in their Media Library.

i have a ? now if i use dl this and sync my crates does this for the file names too because when i imported my tracks ssl only named a couple tracks the way i had them named and i am still in the process of renaming thousands of songs ... artist etc .. it is taking for ever

I would be much more comfortable using ScratchTools if there was a user interface, I really don't like using the command line/Terminal.

Seriously, it's not that hard, scary, complicated, etc. as you guys make it sound. I don't really know much about command line stuff either, and I made all the guides for ScratchTools. All the guides have nice pics and examples and I use plain simple English, no big fancy technical terms or words. And if you still can't get it, nik or I will be happy to help (just make sure to post on the ST forums and not here).

And nik has said many times a GUI is in the works.

Konix did a really nice job with this... he really helped me a lot without even knowing.

If you run into trouble both Nik and Konix are very cool about helping.

I didn't know anything about it either in the begining.

It's not hard but it's not exactly easy. The great thing though, is that if you are careful and have the proper backups, you can't really mess anything up.

Yeah, on top... ST automatically backups your library files before altering them. (this does not include your audio files! But those are usually not touched except when you are using the rename function)

not every one comes from a nix school of thought. this is the whole reason a gui was created for the os's.

some users do not feel comfortable entering commandline instructions or can't type well, while others can make a pc give them head with nothing but keystrokes.

commandline and gui applications have their pros and cons, but i believe that scratchtools will benefit from a gui.

A GUI can be made self explanatory - commandline not. I try to make the commandline syntax as "intuitiv" as I can but I still have to look up the syntax and what stuff I have to enter.

However, the commandline is great for scripting. For occasional use a GUI is def' better.

EXACTLY... like me im dyslexic... and cant type well on to of that... so for me command line is something I try to stay away from b/c I might make my computer do something it should not and erase my entire HDD when im just trying to rename a file

heh - these little complaints are funny to me. I've tried to introduce ST to some of my DJ friends, and they always look puzzled. It's amusing to me, because it seems retarded that people resist a program that makes life so much easier.

Instead of complaining about the GUI not being ready, you should have all donated $25 and I'm sure it would have been done by now.

ScratchTools saved me countless hours of updating my crates & subcrates by hand. After I work all week downloading and organizing new tracks, I don't have to worry about repeating my efforts in SSL - all I do is type out a command line that I memorized a LONG time ago. I could rattle this off in my sleep it's so simple - cd c:\Program Files\ScratchTools - java -jar -Xms512m -Xmx512m ScratchTools - enter (just to make sure the little menu of commands pops up; then hit the up arrow and type in an extra "G:/" --sync-subcrates "cMo;cMo" and BOOOOM tons and tons of lines start magically appearing, doing my job for me - it's great, you should try it.

I have a text file where I store the most frequently used ScratchTools command lines :)

Exactly, just make a text file of the commands you use most, rename it a batch file, then all you have to do is click the file, and it will automatically run the commands. Don't even have to retype everything.

hey just tell me where your music is stored and what you want to do and i'll make batch files free of charge......this program is the shit....i am just gettin back into the command line and it brings back memories...life is much easier making batch files for all your stuff. i have one batch file that ask me before proceeding so i do all my task from one batch file. If anyones interested i could do one with every command and tailor it to your specific setup. i could even make it executable from the desktop.

The only thing that annoys me about ScratchTools is that on Windows you have to use / instead of \ for your path names, this means you can't use tab completion which slows me down. Apart from that it's a really sweet program and does everything I need it to.

You can see that I use an external drive for my DJ stuff (so I can take it to work with me and home for the weekends). Obviously my external drive shows up as G on my computer, but it might be different on yours. The key is to have that / instead of \.

When I double click the install-jar icon it keeps trying to unzip, even after i have unzipped it and saved it. I looked for an exe file to install the program but no luck. Am i doing something wrong?

There is no .exe file for ScratchTools, the installer is all Java based. Make sure you have the latest version of Java installed on your computer.



Not unless you need some of the feature/functions ScratchTools can do. If you are new to SSL, I would say then you probably don't need ScratchTools yet. Learn the ins and outs of SSL first, and its limitations, then decide if you want or need to use ScratchTools.

Shit, can we get a Automator Script or something? That would be the easiest way to do it for the mac guys. Turn those command lines into Automator Actions until you can get a GUI based thingee.

A friend who is a Mac geek just got Serato recently thought he may be able to help, but shit, he is a web guy, not a Programmer. He wrote some code for Engadget years back that became the base model template of their current website.

I would like to clarify a few things.

1st. Thanks for all the offers, but please only donate anything if you think that the software deserves it, aka it helps you or helped you and saved you time thus money and energy. I do not want anyone to donate for something which is not there yet. We all know how bad it feels if you paid for something and it can't keep up with your expectations, in such a case I would feel bad if you spend for it and it turns out, that you do not like the 'final' product.

2nd. This is mostly a time issue. I have a daytime job, and Robin (who is mainly working on the GUI) has school/university stuff. So while I must agree that if a rich donator would spend a million $ I would have more time to work on it (cause I wouldn't have to do my daytime job anymore ;) ) this might not apply to Robin. Money can't buy a university degree ;) Fortunately.


3rd. Again, thanks for all the support, but honestly, DJ Art, I feel a little bit irritated by the $1 offer. If 25 people from this thread would unite, that would be a total of astonishing $25, minus paypal fees, which would be in the end a grand total of maybe $10 :-) I hope you see where it is going... With $10 I can barely pay the hosting fee for the website for 1 month. Yes, cruel world we're living in ;) I hope you can understand that this will not effectively speed up the development speed.

Using ScratchTools saved me a loooooot of hours doing stupid, repetitive tasks and pure headahce, and this is a lot worth for me, definitly more than 25 bucks, thats my personal opinion. However... There is this one bar where I spun a few weeks ago, very nice place, cool people. So at the end of the night, the owner was in the back counting the money or whatever. While they are closing down the bartender asks me whether I need anything. It looks like he wanted to clear the room and wanted to throw me out. OBviously he did not notice I was the guy who played the great music. So I tell him "I am waiting for the owner to get paid" - "Oh... so you have already arranged something with him?" - "Uhm, no, nothing fixed." (The arrangement was a fix part and a variable part depending on the amount of money they make at that night) So the bartender stops for a second and then thinks that it is his time to shine for night... "Okay, how about this, I'll give you 50€" with a face expressing "isn't that an awesome deal?". I laughed affectedly at him and told him, that he sucks, his offer sucks, and that I feel offended by his offer.... and that I am waiting for the owner....

No disrespect nik, the dollar was the equivalent of a email sign up list to show you that we are serious about a GUI. You could just post and say "Anybody Interested in a GUI - PM me" but since the motivation was submit money to complete the GUI part, maybe $25 or 50 or 100 on good faith would be a start.

Shareware tools start at $10 and up, so to give you a dollar on good faith as a HEY I'M INTERESTED was just a suggestion. If 100 people send you $1. that is $100. If GUI Scratch Tools became $10 or 20 donationware AFTER completion that would be $1000 to 2000 dollars. That has nothing to do with good faith dollar that we all sent - two separate things.

The dollar was just a suggestion for all the people CRYING for a GUI to put their money where their month is as the poster above suggested - a YES I AM INTERESTED IN A GUI DONATION - here's $1 to show you I mean business.

The dollar was NOT a suggestion of a price for your HARD work, but "faith money" so you cold see the potential of moving forward with the GUI.

Honestly, no because I think it related to PC's so I skipped it back in the day when I was really tracking this thread.

Notice most if the guys begging for a GUI are Mac guys. That is the way we like things - Point, Click, Drag, Drop, and most importantly - IT WORKS...

PC guys are used to command line interface because that what they exposed to since DOS to keep things in order or better yet - just do things.

I DON'T want to turn this into a Mac/PC debate, but the biggest thing about the Mac is the GUI. That's like telling a Vinyl guy to play with Serato in INTERNAL MODE instead of Vinyl or CD. Sure it can be done but that is NOT what we do.

I consider myself a Intermediate Mac user and I can count on my hands how many times I have played in Terminal and still have fingers left.

Just saying....

I opened Terminal once to unlock dual monitor mode on my Imac g5, but that was it.

I used the terminal to try and eject a stuck disk a couple years ago, all it did is was remind me of elementary school playing with BASIC

Yeah iTunes really doesn't serve much purpose in Serato. It would be great if I could set up all my crates as playlists in iTunes and efficiently use them in SSL. Then I could enjoy those playlists even when I'm not DJing.

Sadly, the iTunes library is just too slow in SSL.

Still looking forward to ScratchTools GUI, I can't do command lines.

But ST is really awesome, how cool would it be if Serato bought it off of Nik and built it right into SSL?

I-tunes works great for me... sure, I have to wait 5-10 seconds for it to load up when I start SSL but after that everything's pretty much instant. It's certainly a fair tradeoff for access to smart playlists...

itunes phucked up all my serato mp3's ill never use that $#!T again.

with scratch tools you can't go wrong....i've been using it so long i feel like a pro.....itunes offer to manage your shit and it cant handle it. I think there was a version of itunes (a pre-ipod version) that really was good but since the ipod it just sucks ass.

send me your directory structure...like where your music located on the drive and where is the scratchlive folder the complete path.... you could use windows explorer windows navigate to the folder then copy and paste the info from the address bar....that way i could make some batch files for you then you could get the idea from those....PM me

will do capt. the ssl1 program is in the default dir where all progz get in stalled on the c drive. but all my mp3 are on a ext drive. ill send the info in few mins.

Hi .. Seems like we have some smart ppl in this forum ..
The reason I came onto this forum is because .. After a quarter of a century of spinning vinyl .. I fully switched to Serato in 2006 .. and I have used it on tour and at many many venues .. rocking crowds of up to +2500 party people .. I have also been live to air on the main radio station here in Montreal for over 10 years now Live to air from various clubs .. This last year I have been using SSL and I have been having major complaints about the sound quality of my files from the station, the club owners, the promoters and the other DJ (who uses cd's recorded at 320 bitrate) .. I'm not blaming Serato .. but .. I wanna know if anyone else has similar problems .. or answers .. The other DJ gets his house music from wherever .. all recorded at 320 bits .. and the places I get my Hip Hop RnB Regaae ect only send files at 192 bits . .. Max .. So after those other DJs go on and its my turn to spin .. the sound quality drops so much .. its a BIG difference ! What should I do ? It came to the point where I was at such a loss that I have left that club, the radio Live to Air and the station ! Thats a $40K loss per year ... I need answers .. and results ?! Any help or comments are welcome ..

Its not a Serato problem .. more of an Industry problem .. digiwaxx, kratesavers, labels and other urban pools and sources to get music from think that 192 bitrate is sufficient .. but really its not .. I thought there was a software or some way of converting all these 192 and lower bitrate files to a higher (256 or 320) bitrate quality .. my other club night are ok .. just the radio ones and the ones where the other djs play cds and 320 bitrate tracks .. its really annoying

Changing a 192 to a 320 just gives you a 320 with 192 sound quality. You can't make it better once it's at the lower bitrate, sad to say.

I sent you a PM but I know a pool that has services all their tracks at 320 that many Billboard Reporters and Radio mixers use with no or few complains. Check out www.idjpool.com and contact the pool director for more info.

The files do make a difference on a big system and remember those files will eat drive space like crazy (just went from a 80Gb to a 250 external to keep up).

The Scratch Tools now don't work with SSL 1.8.1 beta because of _ScratchLIVE_ new directory. Don't know if this problem was already mentioned, but rather say it now.
There is a surrogate with copying the content of .ScratchLIVE to _ScratchLIVE_, but not work very well.

Thanks for the heads up Delf, I am aware of that challenge. Once when 1.8.1 final comes out you should also see a fix for ScratchtTools.

with SL closed, can I rename the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on my external drive to .ScratchLive, run scratch tools, then rename back to _ScratchLIVE_ and open SL?

Yes.

No, you can't name/make folders that begin with a period. But, there's always another way. You should still have a .ScratchLIVE folder (if not, load 1.8 up and make a crate and put a song in it from the external drive, close 1.8 and this will make the .ScratchLIVE folder for you), in which case you could just copy everything from the _ScratchLIVE_ folder to the .ScratchLIVE folder, do whatever you need to in ScratchTools, then copy everything back from the .ScratchLIVE folder to the _ScratchLIVE_ folder.

I run the command to show hissen folders and I can make a folder that starts with "." Seems to work as I have done it before / OSX 10.5.2

That's fine then, but in general without doing any tweaking to the OS, normally you cannot make files/folders that begin with a period.

FYI... for those mac users out there...

The following commands (without the "") will allow you to view hidden files / folders from finder. You execute the command in terminal (actually 2 commands) first to turn on the option, then to kill all instances of finder (for the option to take effect) Finder will automatically restart. ALL COMMANDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE

"defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE"

"killall Finder"

Then once your done... issue the following (change TRUE to FALSE) and it goes away.

"defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE"

"killall Finder"

You will find that once you know this, you use it quite often so I recommend creating a shell script to automate it and just throw it on the desktop

No. It works fine on a PC as well.

Yes, ScratchTools works fine on PCs, just my video tutorials are done on/for Mac. If you have a PC I'd still encourage you to watch the videos (and read the text guides, which I do have for PCs), cause it's basically the same process on PCs.

I couldn't live without ScratchTools! I wouldn't even consider upgrading to 1.8.1 or anything else without it, unless of course SSL had this sync-subcrates function built in.

I used to hate dragging and dropping tracks and folders into SSL by hand, but after using ScratchTools I can't even imagine doing that again.

If you give up on this program you are really missing out and I feel sorry for you! I'm always baffled by people who don't use this program after I tell them about it.

Like I said before, pay for the service because the program is free.

The service nik & Konix provide you is worth more than you could ever send them. I didn't realize how much it was worth until reading nik's 1, 2, & 3 above! Can't believe 3 weeks have flown by since then, guess I haven't checked this thread for a while.

Hey man... I guess it is really good that you did this tool and made it available free and all. But I have to tell you, it is quite frustrating to use. I work in IT for a living... and I find it quite painful to try to use the command syntax. I only wanted it to build my crate structure from my folder structure and I can't seem to get it to do that.

What would it take to have a GUI for this tool ? I really can't see the average non technical DJ using this without frustration. For those who have been using it, well thats all well and good, but I am willing to bet that most ppl have a hard time with it.

I'm not really bashing you nik39, just really letting you know that it has been frustrating to use the syntax and ask if we can just get a GUI that allows you to choose the relevant paths and then pick the task to perform.

I know these tools are a bit complicated to use.. but these days people are to lazy to spend the time to figure it out. Instead they want a click once solution.

Even if you spend a whole saturday trying to figure this out, it will be worth it for a long time.

Tanx Knockz. ceem like u is a brethren from yawd 2. I have the exact same arrangement of my library as you do for reggae... YearX>>Riddim & YearX>>Tracs and I like them sorted by BPM. I did the same thing of prefacing the subfolder names with the BPM value.

Thanks for the script!! I will try it out. When I looked @ dropping every riddim subfolder into the top level crates with Serato functionality I said, this is ridiculous! Serato engineering don't kno nuttin 'bout Dancehall genre -lol, lucky ting sey we resourceful.

No prob... I find that every type of music is sorted differently. I have the year structure for each but because dancehall I devide into reggae/dancehall and then into riddims and singles it makes things a bit more complicated. So I found my way.

Soca is also getting that way since they started doing the riddim thing as well.

Once I get them into serato in a sorted format its easy to make playlists from there that i would use for certain sets. This process just reduces the amount of work I do big time thanks to the scratchtools.

Agreed, it should not be that hard. Technology should make things easier. ST does make things easier (I don't have to do all things manually) but yes, it should be even easier.

@Knockz, I follow your guide ok, but I am not too sure I understand the .txt file i.e. "ReggaeSync.txt". Do you manually prepare this file before referencing it in the ST script? I thought ST was going to be able to just read the folder structure I give it in the command line and CREATE a similar Crate structure in SL.

I use the txt file to create a little more customization with my sync. On some music like my "house" music I just want to dump all the 2000-2008 music into one 200X folder. But on the HD i want it to stay in the individual folders.

I had to look up the instructions again as I haven't modified it since it has been setup but I believe you can replace the specified file name with something like

"hiphop;/ssl_tracks/new_hiphop"

and it should sync all the folders and subfolders in "/ssl_tracks/new_hiphop" into the "hiphop" crate.

I pulled that from the scratchtools help on the site.

If your afraid of losing your crates just backup all the crates on the drive and then go crazy with scratchtools. If it messes up the crates just do a restore.

Okay I finally got the script to run through without problems and it created all of my subcrates to match my filesystem subfolder structure.

I am unclear about one thing though. Using the ScratchTools example that says:
Full Synchronization option
This option does not require any additional parameters.
ScratchTools <librarylocation> --full-sync
example:
"You want to synchronize following crates -> folders while creating a subcrate for each subfolder, and you want only those tracks in the according crate. You want old tracks in the crates to be deleted from that crate. "

When it says "you want only those tracks in the according crate", I didn't expect that parent crates for subcrates would show all tracks from the subcrates. Is there a way to make the parent crates show ONLY the tracks that are in them and not include tracks in the subcrates as seen in the file system ?

Additionally, after using the example: java -jar -Xms512m -Xmx512m ScratchTools.jar "D:/" --full-sync --sync-subcrates "promo;/ssl_tracks/promo_music;bought;/ssl_tracks/bought_music"

it seems you have to go back and manually sort the subcrate names if you want them in order. Knockz you mentioned that you name the subcrates as I do with a BPM prefix. In this case the subcrates aren't in ascending order. An advise ?

I'm taking a guess at this one. There is an option in ScratchLive under setup/library called "Include subcrate tracks". This will show all the tracks in the parent crate for all subcrates below. I wonder if you have this selected.



Another guess here.. but I had to pad the BPM numbers to get the order I liked. Pad it to 3 digits. So if your crate is 96 bpm start the foldername with (096).

The problem I had is it wasn't sorted properly because of the (100) vs (96). Once I padded them it was fine. Give that a try.

One note about using the script is that if you are using it to build all of many crates at once, it seems to have a limitation to process about 8 folders at a time.... if you use the syntax to apply the command to multiple folders separated by semicolon. I suppose if you re-issue the java command for each folder or issue it each time with up to 8 folders you can do them all at once in the same batch file.

About the "you want only those tracks in the according crate" question, you were exactly right Knockz! The option in Serato setup determines this. Thanks for pointing that out!

About the folder sort by BPM, I have padded my folders as you did. My format looks something like:

The trick is to supply a text file with all cratenames and folders, I think there should be an example in the release notes.

I hate supplying all that stuff into one commandline.

As for the sorting I'm not sure. I use "(XXX) Riddim name". My crates come out sorted but I'm not sure if that is serato sorting it or if its because the order they get added in is already sorted.

I also have a line at the end of my batch file that does this ...

java -jar -Xms512m -Xmx512m "c:\program files\scratchtools\ScratchTools.jar" "C:/Documents and Settings/Knockz/My Documents/My Music/" --reset-columns "bpm;artist;song"

It basically resets my columns on all the folders. I don't know if this affects the sorting as well. Might want to try it.

I'm also not sure if the scratchtools has a sort feature.

You have to run the command every time you put new tracks in your folders. That's why it's a good idea to make a batch file if you plan on doing this function often. Just double click the batch file and it will do its thing automatically.

thanks Konix. It sounds like a good program but I think I'll wait for it to have auto-sync instead. This seems like a hassle considering all you have to do is drag the folder to the crate and the same thing will happen. (Mirrored crate structure). It wont double it.

IMHO, I'll do without this feature but the others are amazing none the less.

still I value the hard work nik has put in to this and your tutorials were helpful.

For few folders/crates, sure it's probably (rather, is) easier to just drag and drop the folders and it will add the new songs. However, once you start using multiple folders then it begins to be a pain and ScratchTools really shines. I mirror my already folder structure (which is very meticulous) to my crates/subcrates. I update some 20-30 folders on a weekly, if not daily, basis. There's no way I would drag and drop all the folders every time. This is where ScratchTools really comes in handy and has been a godsend.

I talked to nik about the new folder structure in 1.8.1. Although he said he would add the logic into the program, I find it a lot easier to just add into my script the rename of the _ScratchLIVE_ folder to .ScratchLIVE before running ScratchTools, then renaming back to _ScratchLIVE_.

This keeps things simple by having only one library folder and will prevent having two un-synced libraries.

This New version aint workin with my existing batch files, and BTW since i upgraded to 1.8.1 the folder remain as ScratchLIVE and not _ScratchLIVE.... i think the file structure is only in reference to external drives, correct me if i'm wrong...so nik i think you goto change it back because 0.6 was working perfect with 1.8.1...

I want to learn how to use scratch tools (sync crates to folders for now just to get a hang of the basics). I am stuck in placing the comand after i open the cdm box. Here is my stuff info:

i A SPLIT HARD DRIVE/PARTITIONED: c FOR COMPUTER PROGRAMS AND INTERNET AND D: FOR MUSIC STORAGE AND ALL OF SERATO SOFTWARE. i don't have any of MY MUSIC FOLDERS/ETC/ETCL... JUST PLAIN D: AND THEN THE FOLDERS WITH MUSIC AND SUBFOLDERS INSIDE THE folders. that might be the reason why the comands are not working.

nik, do you know if it's possible to control what is being loaded into the mixer buffer? if so, how possible would it be to stream Live (or near live) audio (like from the line in, or sound card In (if you have one) to your PC say to a virtual deck?

or is it only really possible to write tools for liberty functions?

I'm not necessarily asking for it to be in a Skratchtools, I'm just interested and asking. I really want this feature in SL itself and if the interest isn't really there would be interested in trying to do the work myself? (prob not the best person for this atm...)

Maybe it's as simple as making or using a recorder that keeps a valid audio file at all times and then making a tool that continuously loads the updated file every time the file get loaded into the buffer? Or maybe this idea is impossible? or wouldn't work anyway. what do you think?

has anyone managed to get the Map Videotrack functionality to work?

I just downloaded ST a month or so ago, and have totally sorted out my libery... Thanks and Bigs to scratch tools for that... however I can't seem to get the map video to track to work... I can see Scratch tools working away printing out loads of text to the Terminal... but when I go back into Scratch Live... all my tracks are still not linked to video :(

Anyone else having problems with this?
If I did have a typo in the video path, would ST not come back with error messages instead of success messages? (I'm fairly sure my spelling is correct here though)

Also, It seems to do this for whatever crate I state in the --associate-video command... having written this post I now strongly suspect user error, but I can't figure out what... the paths look correct to me, and I use the same cut and paist basic command structure... the file paths I also cut and paist around from other statements i've used successfully before... they look good to me... It's a fairly old DB, that has gone through many versions of SL, always on the same external HD.
