scratch has problems writing tags on some tunes

The whole time I've been using Scratch, a couple of years, I've never managed to sort this one out. On some tunes, Scratch doesn't save the tag info if I have changed it. ie. in the genre field annoying sites tag the file with something like "other". I then change this to the correct genre. Then, next time to load the tune or double click on it to change any aspect of the tags, it reverts back to 'other'. Sometimes this happens sporadically, other times I can work round in a continues loop re-naming the tag, letting Scratch save it, then double clicking and it reverts back to the original and I go round in circles. Other tunes no problem.

I assume this is all connected with the complexities of id 3 (etc) tags which I now have some knowledge of but still limited knowledge. It's the one thing I've wasted the most time with on Scratch, I'd estimate about a straight 24 hours in total over the 2 years. This unusually doesn't seem to happen with other programs such as mp3tag or rapid evolution.

mp3's are a pain in the ass. I've actually moved to wav. files now for quality although this brings up it's own complications with tagging.....anyway i'd really like to get this tag saving problem sorted with the huge amount of mp3's I own. it seems to be solved if I go into the properties of the tune in windows and, say, delete "purchased at beatport" from the comments field. but I don't have time to do that for each individual tune on several tags. any suggestions?

sorry my serial number has come off the sticker.

Hello graham,

The problem is there is too much id3 tag information in the file due to it being ran through various tagging programs or the id3 tag version is a version that SSL doesn't get along with.
The way to combat this is to strip the tags and then converting them to version 2.3.

I would suggest using iTunes for this operation.
Below are instructions on how to do that:

Note: This will delete any cues or loops you might have in your files. You might want to try this on one track first.

If you don't use iTunes than you'll want to go into the 'advanced' preferences of iTunes first and uncheck the 'copy files to iTunes music when adding to library' option.
Once you've done that than drag and drop all of your music into iTunes and follow the directions below.

1. Completely quit all programs.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Click on your 'music' to show all the songs in your library.
4. Select all (apple+a Mac) (ctrl+a PC) or select one song for testing purposes.
5. Right click on the highlighted area or the one song.
6. Select 'convert id3 tags'.
7. Check the 'id3 tag version' and select 'none'.
8. Press 'ok'.
9. Click on the 'advanced' column.
10. Select 'convert id3 tags'.
11. Check the 'id3 tag version' and select '2.3'.
12. Press 'ok'.

Once your done with this procedure you can delete everything out of iTunes by highlighting everything (apple+a Mac or ctrl+a PC) and pressing the delete key.

Shut down iTunes, open SSL, and rescan your id3 tags.

As far as editing your id3 tags in SSL.... just highlight groups of files and edit one of the columns for one of the files and SSL will edit the same column for all the tracks highlighted. Nice and easy:)

Let us know if your still having issues and we'll go from there.

I've given this a go but it didn't work.

It seems Scratch has real issues with the tag: ID3v2.3 (ID3v1 ID3v2.3)

itunes didn't succeed with stripping the tag.

the same tag with 'Lycrics 3v2' in the middle doesn't seem to conjure up the same dilema. As far as I know now, neither do the other tags.

incidentally, on the 'advanced' column, there was no option to 'convert id3 tags' . i could only do this by right clicking on the files.....

How are you determining iTunes didn't strip the tags?
Keep in mind, it won't strip all the id3 tag info... just overviews, cues, loops.

Please upload one of the problem mp3s for me to take a look at via the 'attach a file' link in this thread.

I'll check it out and let you know my findings.
