Hi Nicky D,
It sounds like you've got a corrupt database and/or crate(s) on your external hard drive. Firstly, try doing this:
1) Open Finder and navigate to the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external hard drive.
2) Rename the database V2 file to something else (eg. old_database V2).
3) Open Scratch Live, does it load ok?
Please let me know if this works or not as we may need to try something else :)
