Max Msp

I can't seem to get the Rane ttm 57sl's midi outputs or inputs to register has human interaction devices in Max/Msp. I would really like to be able to make patches that I can control right from my mixer. I have heard that this has to do with some sort of block on the mixer, somewhere. If that is the case, couldn't that just be unblocked or something? If that is not the issue, could you fill me in on what the problem is, so maybe I can take time myself to fix this problem.
