Jumping Tracks When Playing

While playing there is a regular jump in the tracks im playing. There doesnt seem to be a USB drop out problem and i have followed the instructions on here to adjust the peformance of my machine. The spec of my machine is as follows and is New. Ive got 4gb of ram and a 500 gig hardrive on my machine.

I've also transferred my audio giles onto my pc as i was using an external hardrive.

Im Thinking that maybe its a problem with the calibration settings or decibel estimate, could you help please ?

Sounds like it will be a calibration problem, go here to check out how to calibrate properly:

Make sure you have either your turntables grounded, or don't have keylock or master tempo on your CD player. Also check you have the right input selected (Phono or Line on the SL 3 unit).

Yeah iv'e tryed all that thanks, in the end i removed vista and put xp professional on my new machine seems to have helped to a certain degree. Think the laptop i bought (toshiba) had a load of applications built into the software on bootup etc which didnt help

Even with the xp installed though im still not getting 100 percent performance which can be a pain when your mixing. Its not a jump or usb dropout now more of a glitch and i have notice the waveforms can be shaky when it does this.

So you are using turntables? What make and model?

What are your laptop specs (make, model, CPU, RAM, hard drive, other USB devices used)?
Do you make sure you do all the following:

* Always plug directly into the computer’s USB port, not a hub.
* Check that you are using a ‘good’ USB port. If you are using a Macbook Pro, this can be the left port or for models with two USB ports on the left and Macbooks this will be the port furthest away from the screen.
* Switch off Bluetooth, wireless network and unplug any wired network connections.
* Switch off screen saver and set sleep mode and hard drive sleep to 'never'.
* Ensure you have ample room left on your hard drive (this is approx 10% of your hard - both internal and external).
* Close down any other software, including antivirus software or the like.

Im using cd players not turntables. They are dn4500 denons.

The laptop i have is brand new Toshiba Satelitte p300-1c9 17 inch model its got 2.96 ram and a 500 harddrive. and the cpu is a intel core 2 duo cpu p8400 @ 2.26 ghz.

The only other usb device i use is a Mouse, There is plenty of space on my hardrives. I will try different usb port in work later and with reinstalling xp i have ensured no other programmes etc are running.

Using XP - have you made sure all your laptop drivers are up to date? (Check your manufacturer's website).
Sometimes manufacturers don't have all the right drivers for a downgraded OS. This can cause more problems, especially with new machines that weren't designed for XP.

What kind of mouse is it?

I will check all updates on the laptop when i get home later. The problem improved when i removed vista and installed xp but its still not stable enough to mix on and i still get the odd glitch in certain tracks. The usb mouse im using is a small trust mouse rather than the mouse built into the laptop its easy to use. I've also adjusted the setting on the laptop from letting windows decide whats best for performance or looks to better performance. Hopefully this will improve things later when im in work.

Sorry to bother you again. I've just realised that i ran the ratt report when my rane interface wasnt connected with me leaving it in work. I ran the player in standard mode without the interface connected i hope this was ok if not let me know and i will do the report agian with the interface connected.

Here are some fixes:
HDAudBus.sys
This is your soundcard driver.
Try going to the manufacturer of your computer's website and make sure you have the latest updates/drivers.




USBPORT.SYS (USB port driver.)

* Try connecting to a different USB port.
* Use a different USB cable.
* Go to your computer manufacturer's website and check if there you are using the most up-to-date drivers.
* Try using an external power supply for your hardware.



ACPI.sys (Power management)

If you have USB dropouts and are having trouble finding a cause on a seemingly powerful machine, check if your computer is ACPI by opening the device manager:

1. Go to control panel
2. Click system
3. Click the hardware tab
4. Click device manager
5. Click the [+] next to Computer
6. If you see "ACPI uniprocessor PC" or similar, you have ACPI.


Quick method for disabling ACPI power management on some laptops

Try taking your battery out and just run off the power supply, this stops ACPI from trying to manage the battery on some model laptops.

You can disable ACPI if you think it might still be a problem:

HOWEVER IT CAN BE HARD TO REVERSE THIS, AND YOU MAY HAVE IRQ CONFLICT ERRORS, SO DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND CAN AFFORD SOME SYSTEM DOWN-TIME! AND MAKE A BACKUP!

BEFORE PROCEEDING Make a new system restore point by using the system restore wizard in help and support (start menu).

Ive updated the sound card drivers on my machine there was two updates avaliable so installed both. I've also removed the battery from my machine with the acpi issue. The only task i cant complete yet is the usb port driver any ideas ? I've also replaced the lead and im going to try a new port later.

Are there any USB port driver updates? If not, then you may be on the best driver.

Will double check and find out, I tryed a new lead and removing the battery from my machine tonight at work. The same fault is present so i think im going to try and diasble acpi and see how things go.

Usually it is the latest one, so give that a go.
You can always disable the soundcard drivers temporarily, they can often cause interference with pro audio if they aren't written very well.

Will try that tonight wasnt sure you could do that. Though it may have caused problems with scratch live. Im thinking being honest of strating again reinstalling serato and xp !! Would you recommened this ? because im getting a little annoyed with not being able to rely on it as much as when i was using cds.

It depends on if the issues with things are there because of system conflicts and driver issues, if that's the case, then they will still be there on re-install.

Do everything you can, then do another RATT report and upload again, that can sometimes unmask other problems. Might be a lot less painful than a clean install :D

OK. So you are still getting the same results.

Can you disable the soundcard completely for the moment?

Try other USB ports, make sure no other USB ports are being used. Make sure your SL 3 is being powered.

And the ACPI, if you don't use the power adaptor for your laptop, does that make it any better?

Thanks for getting back to me, i will try disabling the sound card later and the other suggestions you have made. I always have my SL3 powered and when i remove the battery it hasnt really made any difference.

Sorry to be a pain hows best to disable the sound card. Is it best through the device manager and remove the audio codecs ?

Yep, go into the device manager, and make sure it is disabled, sometimes it may be better to uninstalled - some people have advised that this works better than just disabling, but just disable first and see how it goes. Right click on the device to get options. It should be under 'Sound, video and game controllers'.

I tryed a different port tonight and not using any other usb devices. The same problem was there. Im just to disable the driver but no joy it doesnt seem to be giving me the option in my device manager. Sorry to be a pain.

If you right click on the device do you get the options to disable or uninstall?

Im not on vista anymore pal remember i said i installed xp instead thats how i was able to send you the ratt report. The only options im getting when i select the device is update driver scan for hardware and properties. Could you advise please as i dont want to do something to make the situation worse.

I really am considering investing in a apple mac would you advise this as i really do need to get these problems sorted. Its affecting my performance in work and with D.Jing 6 nights a week i need the system to be spot on !!

if you go to the Control Panel, select System, then Hardware tab, and then the Device Manager, you should see 'Sound, video and game controllers' like in the attached image, and your sound card information.

Right there was two sounds cards in there too disable. I have disabled both of them they where as follows ATI Function Driver for high defination audio and conexant high defination smart audio. I will check later and get back to you with a full ratt report ive also removed my battery from the machine thanks.

Have you had any problems like this with apple macs ?

Because Apple research and development of hardware, software and drivers is so tight they don't have similar issues, if there was a problem it'd be more likely to be damaged hardware.

Hmm.....
One thing is that some newer laptops shouldn't really be clocked BACK to XP, as the drivers used will be generic rather than specific, this could be something, poor drivers are a pain.
However - can you try disabling each soundcard one at a time and the other on and see if that helps?

Yeah i was running scratch Live i was actually gigging at the time so though it was best to do it then. The only reason i clocked it back to XP was because it was running so poor with vista. It has improved it but its still has glitches through the audio and i do have jerky/shaky waveforms on the serato scrreen.

Just enable one of the sound drivers, leave the other one disabled. Then swap them over and see if either setup works. Leave all the other things turned off.

Right ive gone and bought a new mac performance again has improved but i am still getting the odd glitch. Does Serato not run well with denon cd players type dn 4500 ? thats what im using them with and a pal of mine has a mac and doesnt have a problem with his and hes using pioneer 1000 mk 111

Was it new?
If so have you only loaded up Scratch Live and no other programs/software or plugged any other hardware into the machine at all?

Yeah the machine is brand new !! Its got a 300 gb harddrive and 4gig of ram. Its a Macbook pro. I havent loaded any programs into it !! And the only other item plugged into the laptop when im playing is a usb mouse.

I will try it tonight when im playing. The Mouse didnt require drivers to install it and i only use it because its a bit easier to use than than the track pad.

If you go into your Music > ScratchLIVE > MIDI folder, do you see a midimap .xml for the 4500? (Or one you have made?). If so can you delete this and see if that helps?

I dont seem to have a folder named midi folder when i go into music > Scratchlive. There is a dropout count file in there if thats any use to you.

OK - this is very odd. Can we go back to the basics for a bit:

Are you using a USB hub?
Have you tried using new cables?
Do you get problems using the control CDs too?

I dont use a USB hub mate, i will try different cables when im next in work and the control cds as i do use copys !!!

Tryed different cables and control cds. Same problem is occuring !! Its not a usb drop out its a glitch in the audio.

Right i have a mate who has the SL3 and he is having the same problem when working with the denon dn 4500 cd mp3 players. We both swapped systems at the weekend and used the dn 4000 and didnt have a problem at all. The problem is with that model of cd player (dn 4500) and not my software etc

Could you explain why and do you know of any updates with this model of cd player to cure the problem.

Can you check your keylock is off on the 4500? (PITCH/KEY I think it is).
Also can you make sure you eject the control CD every now and then, some Denon players seem to have buffer problems, so playing the SAME track all the time without resetting (ejecting) can cause issues.

I've made sure the keylock is off, im also ejecting the cd from time to time. Ive just downloaded the lastest firmware too will let you know how i get on. Is this a common problem with this type of model.

I've heard a couple of people having problems, but not common. Just hearsay on the Denon forum...

You can run the DPC latency checker as here:

Download then play audio in Scratch Live and run the DPC.exe.

You will be shown a bar graph , GREEN (SAFE) Yellow (Caution) Red (Dropouts).
You will also be given a report of any conflicting hardware or software.

No worries, we where up to updating the cd players firmware on the denon 4500. I changed players and didnt have a problem. But the problem i have is a lot of places i work use these so its a pain. I ran the firmware update on the cd players like you suggested but no joy.

Hmmm.. well I think the trouble will be getting every firmware updated if possible... maybe plan some time to do many of these places one day and just go crazy and test it all out so you're feeling happy and confident with every place.

I have ran the updates on a few but the same problem is there. When i use pioneers or the 4000 model i dont have a problem. It is just that particular model

Still Having Problems when using the denon dn 4500 dual cd units and we have run the updates from denon through them. Could you offer some advice please it is the units and nothing to do with my serato or laptop as they work fine on pioneers 1000 and the denon 4000 series too

Yes as i've said earlier in our convo i replaced my new laptop with a mac with 4gb ram with 300 gig hard drive so no problems there and other people i know with scratch live have problems with these cd players

I can't seem to replicate the issue here. Can you take a video of this happening at all? Or if you can't, then an audio recording?

Will do will have to set my mobile up as i dont have the facilty in work to record the audio, having said that could i use the aux input on serato ?

You can use the AUX input to record, although a video would be more helpful, an audio recording will hopefully be enough.
