Scratch Live Update March 2009

Hey all,

Its been along time since any official sticky has been made in here, so I thought I'd update you all on whats been going on with Scratch Live feature wise.

The big news is that 1.9 is almost ready, and it incorporates many of the features that you have all been asking for. A quick summary (New in 1.9) :

History feature This combines a couple of features requested into one:

Sample Player There are a few of these threads - here is the one I found first:

BTW: The sample player is not feature complete - the possibilities with this are pretty endless so keep the suggestions coming.

Artwork for Loaded Tracks This is also not feature complete - we are aware of the request for browsing by artwork too:

Identical column layout for all crates - option

Video SL 1.1 brings SL 1 and MP 4 support

Anyway to sum up, keep the suggestions coming - it's hard to respond to every one of them, but we do read them all I promise :)

As always, remember to search for your suggestion first, and piggy back on the existing thread with a +1 or something similar. Its much easier to gauge interest in a particular feature if we can look at individual threads, not 100 of the same suggestion spread across multiple threads. ;)

AWESOME! The desperate need for true browsable artwork has been officially recognized! I think I just peed my pants a little bit. Wooooohooooo! Thank you soooooo much guys for the acknowledgement and signs of life and superduper kudos on the progression so far on moving in the right direction for this feature. You're getting closer with 1.9 and are almost there :-)

so guys wud we be able to select jus one track in clear reviews to be clear from the list of reviews and not ave the whole list clear like normal coz normally the whole list wudd clear

One other feature that you could think about adding is an mp3 editor. I use several wave editors and it would be nice to be able to edit the track from the Serato window, I don't care if the function calls to an already installed editor. It would save time for when I have to remove dead space or make a clean version of a track. This is probably in the wrong topic, but the other one is full and won't allow anymore suggestions.

Fix FX ergonomics already!

Enough waiting, fix it already - It's ludicrous I'm considering buying an EFX unit.

Not quite, getting there.....

I've downloaded the Video-SL Beta. Very impressed but the one feature i was looking for was not there. Will there be a feature in the final release that will let you add a "default" video OR .jpg to play for a plain audio file with no video. I know we can make a "set video" for individual audio files but just seeing if this automatic feature will ever be available.

It's embarrassing - we don't want to be hunching over our laptops like that.

I have also noticed you can not assign midi controls to 57sl hardware functions/buttons which would solve the above problem.

I would like to see a default setting for adding new crates and sub crates. Its a bit of a pain to have to set up each crate to the way I like it each time I add a new one. I would like to be able to save a default and not have to change it every time. Such as Track, artist, Bpm, Key, Comment and length. Thats all I have a use for and its so annoying to get rid of the other collum's every time. Thanks for listening.

BTW, 1.9 is really hot!!! Love the sampler and the fact that the song does not change to green until the next deck is loaded, That really helps. I would love to be able to have a pitch control on the sampler one day. OR perhaps have the sampler the only thing in scratch live that can match beats for you. I would love to be able to make loops in my studio, put them in the sampler to a pre set bpm and have the ability to change the pitch for ALL BANKS AT ONCE to mix them to the current track playing. That is something that would turn lots of people onto scratch live. The ability to create something on the fly with your own loops. I hope this idea helps a little. Thanks for reading. Sal Mastro

I would like to see a new feature that allows automatic doubling to an open sampler player. This would include current track pitch and key lock info as well as loop. So I guess the sample player would need pitch, key-lock, and looping features added and all midi assignable of course. :-) Add internal EQs to each player.

Because many believe (me included) it is the single biggest hurdle for vinyl (and cd) dj's when switching to a DVS.

Instant doubles while "lock playing deck" is checked.

If you are seasoned enough to instant double, I don't see why you would need to lock the playing deck...

A move toward traktor pro and the loss of turntables would be the obvious choice. I have used traktor pro and it's impressive array of effects and I'm still always going back to Scratchlive for its rock-solid stability. NI is on the right track but still notoriously unstable/ unreliable. The Serato Itch seems interesting but still not quite there yet. Serato's loops and cue points (when used properly) can emulate many of Traktor's features and the addition of a small midi controller make Serato the much more stable alternative. I must admit an effects panel that features some loop-based effects would be nice. I would also love a master tempo clock feature that works like traktor and sends a clocking signal to external devices. I have watched the demos of traktor pro and the use of Maschine as a groovebox and I find that to be very exciting technology. I saw that you are partnering with ableton and I feel that a side app that allows for easier dropping of loop/cue points (while hardware is disconnected) would be a nice addition.

Another idea i've been working out in my head would be a side app that allows you to drop cue points in songs that send signals out via midi- that controls lighting. If I were to have the possibility to have a strobe light that hits on certain kick drums automatically that would be an impressive alternative to the video dj that is (in my opinion) not necessarily creating a dancing atmosphere with music videos drawing crowds to sit and watch.

All of these features would require an slightly more advanced wave editor of sorts that should be possible to use while not having the hardware connected.

-or A dedicated midi controller that has specific setup for two separate channels and transport controls for scrubbing through tracks quickly with the ability to drop said cue points and the controller actually could be the new sl4 box and sound card in one.

I must close by saying that though Scratchlive seems slightly behind the times on features, its always rock solid and stable with every upgrade (unlike the competition). I remember when pitch correction was still unavailable and so many users were waiting for it because NI had it first but they were also constantly plagued with instability. You have my trust and my support based on reliability but advancements due to your partnership with ableton should be made to keep it new and on top of the latest technology that is available.

Name your cue points??

I need some kind lock on my cue points so I don't accidentally change them when triggering back and forth with loop roll and different cue points...or change the modifier key of the loop roll feature -It's to easy to accidentally just hit command instead of option + command & change my cue point.

I have the same problem with the 8 button!

As far as I know, on some Macs command-option-8 is the OSX shortcut for screen zooming on/off. It should work fine using control-option-8.

im mostly positive about this...but it would be nice to be able to search by bpm.

on my laptop (dell latitude 600 / win xp sp 3) the history feature causes serato to crash way too often, such a thing did not happen ever before to me. also serato doesnt want to play tracks it used to play before i have rebuilt the overviews, any hints?

Colur coding your tracks

it's a shame that it's a small coloured dot that changes coulor.

I think it'll work better and be allot more useful if the whole track turns into the selected colour.

it'll be allot more user friendly and allot quicker to use when looking at the crate at a glance.

Instead of colour coding, it would be great that SSL would be able to read the iTunes rating stars

I am working in a club where management frowns heavily on Mp3s. Wav files can't be tagged so are difficult to use in SL. I'm left with FLAC. When oh when Is Serato going to add FLAC to a supported file format?? Please please please ...

I'd be interested to know why they frown on using MP3s. Is it a concern of audio quality? Do they frown on using Serato or other vinyl emulation software altogether? I've just never heard of that being a problem.

Chris, if you use AIFFs instead of WAVs they can take tag data.

I've said this same thing many times on this forum..

Hard drives are big and cheap, and AIFF handles tagging just like an mp3.

There's a little outboard box you can get that does this. I can't remember the name of it offhand. It plugs into the second set of outputs on the mixer.

The latest release candidate in the public beta section supports Apple lossless

My 2 cents:

- Named cue points. Wouldn't it be great to be able to see "transition before here", "wicked breakdown", "voice sample here", etc. etc. instead of yellow, red, or whatever. Cues can mean different things in different tracks, hard to keep it all in your head when you have 1000'nds of tracks to play...

- Improved metadata editing. SSL guys are always saying use SSL for managing your tracks instead of iTunes but c'mon - editing metadata in SSL is really cumbersome. iTunes-like editing would be great, including: A "Get Info.." style pop-up dialog to edit multiple fields at once, that would also allow you to change the metadata on multiple tracks all at once; and Auto-complete in metadata fields as you type would be awesome.

- Dynamic updating of Smart Playlists, iTunes-style.

- iTunes song ratings.

The lack of efficient metadata editing and static smart playlists in SSL are exactly why I still use iTunes to manage my music.
