Honestly, I have a friend who hit up the manager of the bar for a waitress job that these girls work at now and he was straight up, do you wanna DJ?

they are literally plucking girls off the street and from the clubs and turning them into "djs"
no experience necessary.

LOL what a disaster. I highly doubt this will last. They're prob going to charge much more than a real DJ, and obviously they're going to suck. I doubt they're going to draw heads into a club just b/c of a wannabe pornstar in the booth. I mean if people are going to go to a place to see busted ass, they would have gone to see them dance, not "dj"

If I thought it would actually work, I'd follow up on it, but the city won't give us a permit, only the property owners can request it in that area. They used to have killer block parties in that neighborhood back in the day, like 8 bars would participate, but in last 3 years the city has curbed those, and refused to issue permits to anyother than the property owner, not the leasee.

Yeah man you didnt know.. all you gotta do is show up, sign your name and your a DJ.

Nah for real though, its on a Wednesday night. The place is just doing it to get some business going. Most bars/clubs will try anything to get people to come through on a weekday. More power too em if this works for them, but you know damn well they aint putting these broads to spin on a packed night. Dont put anymore thought into it, its just a gimmick.

Now if your promoter starts booking them over you.. then you can start throwing dildos at em..

Think about it this way. It has been proven that the "more attractive" people get more gigs, more money or more shit for free. That being said they are using the sex appeal to sell themselves vs. the DJ skills.
The other part of this is that it's a marketing ploy that will have fire cracker effect. visa vie no long lasting effect. They are not gonna be doing real gigs, and the novelty of it all will wear like the cheap undies these chick don.

I can see this working too. You guys gotta remember that at the end, this business is about making money, otherwise we'd all be bedroom DJ's.

Girls = money. Most people that go out clubbing don't know/care much about the DJ's skills. If the promoters play it smart, and make a show out of them like it seems they are, then it will be like going to a strip club.

You also gotta remember that girls stick together and will support each other to the end. That alone can pack you a small club. Hot girls have hot girlfriends and they usually party together.

Now, let's be realistic. How hard is it for a new DJ to memorize a set using Serato? What if these girls have a real DJ showing them the ropes and showing them their first set? I've done it before. I thought my friend a 30 min set, she learned it to perfection, and she played her first gig at my party. Not only that, but she also had a grip load of other girls show up and support her.

Why is there so much hate on this thread? Just cause they're decent looking girls who decided to take on DJing and use their sexually to their advantage? Come on guys, don't worry about what others are doing, worry about yourself and getting your self up there.

Let the flamming beging!

I agree with Cisc0 tho...I think the whole idea is stupid and crass. Why not have the regular resident DJ spin and have these girls stand next to him and dance? Most likely the same people will come and the same losers who dont have the balls to walk up to a regular girl at the bar will sit there with their mouths wide open wondering what it would be like to get in one of those stretched out beaten up holes, these girls call their vagina.

Why train them on some Ipod bullshit setup and make it seem like DJing is easy and requires no time, effort, practice, or skill. As if us DJs who use Serato dont have enough people already questioning our abilities and talents cuz we are now classified as "laptop DJs", like why go the extra mile and make it look like now all you need to do is call yourself a DJ and hey, your a DJ.

Doesnt matter if its some shitty hole in the wall bar or a club. This idea which more then likely will have minimal success is a blow to every DJ out there who puts in effort and time to build thier skills and hopefully land a gig...now its if you are somewhat hot and have tits, your a DJ. Lame.

We are just having fun not taking ourselves that seriously... We are just having fun!!!

So relax - take a good long look in the mirror because you have got some serious problems...
Goodluck - DH DJ's

I hope 20 shows is the same bar they are at every week...otherwise, shit is just crazy. It is a gimmick and I am sure some idiots outside of the resident bar they are at will go for it, but once they see how absolutely lame it is, they wont be having them back

That's what I was thinking. The promoters don't stop and think. Girls don't want to go party at a place where they aren't the center of attention. And guys don't want to go party at a sausage factory.

(Next to what is now sanctuary...at the end, way back it was "Perrys")
lemme tell ya... it was Massi, Wayne Partello and I all spinnin for him.
though it was 21+ we got shut down becuase it was 90% 18 yr old huss.

thats not the gipper.
we used to have "shit-tay" partys downstairs at 230.
so if u were in the know, youd hang out down stairs til a truckload of strippers
showed up...then we'd spin a lil impromptu stipper party.
so, my hating on him, is limited...he's not the kinda guy lookin to
appeal to the educated crowd... drunk sportsfan type guys ect ect ect.

as far as this idea...
well, its not a good one/... kinda a smack in the face to hard working djs.
but if it brings in 50-100 meat-heads to pound draft beer and get in fights.
so be it.
the dj community has always has people exploit the "coolness" of being the dj
and we always gett madd at that...
now we just stuck a tight lil balloon knot on the equation.

does anyone remember penelope tuesdae?
I saw here in AC dj expo....
it was perfect.

sure enough. train wreck after train wreck.
everyone boo'ing....screaming YOU SUUUUCK.

I'm a betting man, and I'll take that 99%, b/c there is nothing dynamic about these "Dollhouse DJ's". The term Wavie is derived from DJ's who never really trained on Vinyl and strictly purchased a digital DJing program...basically using the WAVEFORMS as there method of learning how to beat match...rather then using ears and more traditional forms...so when something is referred to as Wavie its just another word for microwave in a sense.

Lmao, i dont think so, honestly, when I stopped investing in records and switched to a DVS i didnt know how to use (or didnt know they existed) 3/4 of the functions that SSL offers, I played on ABS mode, and didnt bother learning about waveforms and all that stuff, its only after taking part in this forum, reading about people's use of the little functions available that I decided to really educate myself more about "cheating" lol.

Same here. I first started on Numark CDN-88s. I didn't have Serato and used to practice beat-matching by ear. Then when I got Serato, I didn't even use 1/8th of the features. I used it 100% in ABS mode. Then I went to see my friend DJ at a club and saw him using it with cue points, loops, etc and I was blown away. I went home and tried it out and then really realized the power of this software. MY MAIN REASON I was using Serato was as a way to consolidate my music library into my laptop but I didn't realize all the other things you could do.

I didn't even know it had auto BPM detection. Man, that really made importing music so much easier. I used to use the tap function on my efx-500 to count bpm's manually for each song I imported.

They are even more busted in real life then they are in person, and the only people who she thought would enjoy it, are 50 year old men.
All in all, a circus act more then anything else apparently.

They apparently asked for drinks and wanted "grey goose/redbull" my boy who was bartending gave them the shittiest vodka they had and apparently the dolls thought they were delicious.

lol, but if they were good looking I might be able to grasp owners reasoning of hiring them a tiny bit more.
The concept in general will never be something I agree with, or go with if I was ever an bar owner, but if they are going to do this, could at least hire girls that dont get clowned on by every person who looks at them.

Sad. All this is just a travesty of the DJ game. Along with wavies, This will put an end to quality DJing as we see it if we dont step up and shut these people down. I dont blame the girls, They are just gullible and cant think for themselves. They'd probably suck a dick if you told them it would be good for their health. I will go ahead and quote what Jesus Christ wrote about DJ's earning Serato.

Quote:
You're a DJ! That's right... I said it! A REAL DJ!!! You've been doing this for a long time. You spent countless hours, days, months and years digging through the crates of record stores, pawn shops, thrift stores and garage sales to find the perfect rare track. You spent all your free time learning to blend, scratch and rock a party, club, etc. You carried crates of records, first for the DJ's that you looked up to, then your own crates. You honed your craft. Paid your dues. And finally got the right to call yourself a DJ.

Then all of a sudden, here comes Serato Scratch LIVE. Celebrities start dating DJ's and then it's all over. Now every kid with a few hundred bucks or with a birthday, Christmas or a Bar Mitzvah coming up wants to be a DJ.

They appear out of nowhere... in droves. Walking out of Guitar Center with their new turntables, CDJ's, Scratch LIVE, mixer, and laptop. You know the type. Next thing you know, you got people selling hard drives full of DJ music online. The microwaves are multiplying. And they are cropping up all over the place, calling themselves DJ's.

That's why you have to stand up and DEMAND that Serato Should Be Earned!!!
The same principle should be applied to DJing. Just because your a girl and have looks or a kid with money does not mean you are qualified for a position.

Im here to break it to ya that it will never happen, owners\promoters are out to make money PERIOD. I have yet to meet the owner who was like ya we lost money last night but that dj had talent im glad i paid extra. The only reason the DJ used to hold leverage was because the high cost and time it took to do it at all was a barrier for entry and promoters where always searching for a way to get past that (remember house party poor martin), but sadly like everything else someone figured out the formula broke it down to its basic componets and figured out a way to make it easy enough for everyone to do it.

Now I know some of you will say ya but if you hire a shitty dj people wont come and the owner will lose money. Not true. Weddings are different because they are already spending a ton and their not tring to profit from it, its the 'most important day of their life' so talent can be a factor. With bars\events if there is alchol people will come, if the dj has alot of friends, people will come, good promotion will bring in people to and if girls come so will guys. Lots of bars get by with no dj at all. And to anyone who wants to say well people will not go if the dj isnt skilled.....the same 18 to 30 demographic is the same demo that put soulja boy, wayne and pain at the top of the charts.

I agree in a minimal sense...

Ive been to clubs and bars over the past couple weeks, where the DJ is so bad people are literally just standing there and complaining how bad the music is...the people in that bar that night, WILL NOT return to that place anytime soon. Thats how it works.
DJ's as a dime a dozen as they are, still have leverage. If the place is compeltely packed at 10 and is cleared out by midnight, that is something the management and staff will all notice, and in most cases blame it on the DJ. Hence, the DJ will more then likely not be back.

Owners care about money obv as the #1 thing, but they also care about return customers and keeping the customers happy. If you have 200 people bitching about the DJ, they will notice that.
At 6:05 PM 4 February 2009
Because you tried to shine a ray of hope through the rain cloud over my litle DJ world. Ive havent really come to terms with the reality but its sad. When I was growing up i always looked up to djs and wanted to be one. It took me forever to get the money to get equipment and learn ect, and now that Im there the game goes and changes, ill friends of mine and peopel i meet who hear i am a dj will be like will yo make me a mixtape and Ill get excited like sure what kind of music do you listen to i can mix it tonight, and theyll be like oh no it dosent need to be mixed i dont listen to mixes anyways just put a bunch of good tracks on the cd.

Also it seems like more and more i show up to parties and undergrounds to spin and it seems like every week theres 4 to 5 new djs who show up with their ipods ect. And I talk to them and they dont have a clue about it....To me DJing means something its a lifestyle ive always idolized and im watching it get torn down and trampled by people who want to look cool without working at it at all.....theres my rant

I dont know, I have also been to clubs where the DJ was tearing it up and there were still lines of people bitching that 'hes not letting the song play through' or 'hes playing music i dont like\never heard before' so in those cases a cheaper\shittier dj would be what they want. I mean the dj does hoave SOME power like if hes spinning a top 40 club and hes throwin on DnB or if he just mutilates EVERY mix ya people may not come back but if he can just beatmatch and play hits noone cares, and thats not hard to learn. Around here I have heard some HORRIBLE djs and people still go every fri sat night. Alot of them go for convienience of how to get there, there friends go there, drink specials ect. Plus in alot of places they are limited on where they CAN go, if theres only 3 dance clubs in a area and 3 djs who were gotten cheap their still gonna go to them because they have no choice. As long as they hear their radio songs theyll show up buy lots of alchohol mingle and be happy

this has been the way of things, sadly, since the birth of the CD Burner.

I remember seeing guys selling their "backup cd collection" online, and even in the want ads.

I hope, and pray...that eventually people will start to see the difference between a dj and ...well a non-dj based on what they do at the gig.
most wedding djs have got this figured out, thanks to those videos all over the place of IPOD djs doing weddings for 125.00 and it going horribly.
so....brides get it, wedding planners get it.

we just need club owners/managers to get to that level and understand what a dj with years of experience brings to the table that a instant dj cannot.
no batter how big her flesh-pumpkins are

And to anyone who wants to say well people will not go if the dj isnt skilled.....the same 18 to 30 demographic is the same demo that put soulja boy, wayne and pain at the top of the charts.

but to homeboy's credit, he is saying that there are other factors than ability that factor in. Yeah, the DJ may not have been killing it, but if he brings in 50 people with him, and they show up every time, thats something that will merit his employment, he is good for 50 people. You mob that up with a promoter, who is looking to make a killing on the door, add his numbers to it, and those people show up for that promoter, (b/c the promoter does his job, takes care of his clients and hooks them up occasionally), then you have an equation that the music doesn't matter. The problem is not the people, its not the owners, its not the dj's, its our culture.

People who own clubs buy them because they are lucrative, not because they love the music, the people, the scene or the vibe, all they see is that cash register overflowing. Whatever makes that happen is all they care about. Promoters, in the same regards, are not employed to throw parties, they are there to get people to show up, thats it. They get paid off of that. I don't know many promoters who get into the game other than to make $$, yeah they want the status and look cool, but at the end of the night, they want the chedda.

Someday, I hope to have the good fortune to erect, (no homo), my own establishment, where I will have the overall control, and hopefully, be able to create what the game has been missing, meaningful experiences. I don't want to have the most happening spot, I don't want to have the trendiest place, I just want a place that is my own and will be run the way I think it should be. I will employ DJ's that I will personally interview, I will make my staff understand that working there is a priveledge, at the expense of the patrons, I'm tired of going out and being treated like the venue is doing me a favor being open.

In one of the pics it looks like they start dancing in the front of the rig after each "mix". So let me get this straight

1) Stand behind Numark IPOD gear and bob head while pumping fist in air

2) Shake ass and put finger in mouth while pre-mixed jams play

3) After mix is over--get out from behind rig and dance with other girl dj in a seductive manner teasing all the dumb ass guys who have low self esteem but think they have a shot with them.

4) Run back to rig--put headphones on and pretend to mix songs again

5) Repeat!

you confidence is in the clouds.

the bottom line about this whole thing is, the only reason they are being hired is becuz they are girls who stand in front of a crowd with their asses and tits hanging out. They aer all busted, but apparently that doesnt matter. Thats just how retarded society is these days. They'd rather see a bunch of gross whorey girls for FREE then go to a club with a good dj, good music, and a good vibe.

The industry is so sex driven its brain washing customers and maangers alike. I think people need to step back and realize this type of tom foolery isnt something they should be proud or happy about. Its gross that these girls are taking gigs from quality Djs esp since they dont do a god damn thing, but stand their stand around and whore themselves out to a bunch of drunken fat men.

low self esteem on both parties involved.

they floss with a rope up there.
Brickhouse in RI? wahhhhh... who cares, its a restaurant and they lug in speakers.

when they, and if they...start moving in on venu, roxy, underbar, estate ect ect ect..

these owners are all friends....they are all in the same networks...

Lets face it, in this economy, anthing goes. This is life, there are no rules. They play by there own. Do your thing, and hope someone picks up on it. If not, well those are the breaks.

I get heated that although I am a skilled and talented DJ, I can't get gigs b/c I am not boys with somebody. But I look at that situation and think to myself, I only have myself to blame, I never go out of my way to get in with the people in charge, DJ's, Promoters, Managers whatever, I expect my body of work to speak for itself. I know its not enough, but I value my time in other endevours than chasing down the inevitable. It all ends at some point in time. No matter who you are, what you do, who you know, scenes change, taste's change, music changes, there is no security. You have to be a cold mother fucker to have longevity in this game. These chicks, I don't blame them, they don't know, they just have daddy doesn't love me issues. I can't blame their pimp either, dude had a good idea, and he's gettin paid. Can't hate on that.

I'm slowly realizing that I didn't start the long road to dj-dom to get rich. If I wanted to get rich, I would have gone a different path. Its about the music to me, and its about the love of that music. In the bars and clubs, there is no love. The fact I get to gig out and get paid for it is a bonus. If I wasn't getting paid, I'd still be djing. I will admit, its always better when people are there to hear you and enjoy what you do, but at the end of the day, its not worth my soul. So if SJ can sleep at night knowing this, then more power to him.

so, ONE speaks up:

"As everyone continues to debate the politics of DJing, allow me to state a few simple facts about dollhouse

We are entertainers. Each one of us is unique, outgoing, smart and fierce. Now before you go calling me a talentless gimmick understand this. I am a LED/FIRE poi spinner. I have spun at all types of venues from harvest fest in upstate New York to the candy ball in Brooklyn, Northern Exposure in Maine to the Gothball in Boston. I have put my blood sweat and tears into an art that takes years to master. While the only risk you take day in and day out is whether or not the crowd will like you, I have risked my safety and more to put on a hell of a show. Is it so horrible to have songs through out the night that you know you have a great routine to? Furthermore I do my homework…I make sure I am playing killer shit from international artists to locals with a hot sound.
OK so im no fucking Tiesto but dollhouse gets the crowd moving ,the girls dancing and we create a party atmosphere wherever we are. We have fun…we’re not scared to laugh at ourselves, we make mistakes, we’re not superhuman…we’re also not as superficial as you would like to make us out to be.

thanks for all the kind words and well wishes - just remember that before you point your fingers looking for someone to blame...check yourself first. its easy for us to be the scapegoat for dj's who aren't booking enough shows or whatever else, but your skills will get you the gigs you need...until then stop worrying about what we're doing and just do you."

yes. I was in a horrible mood. It was my birthday, some bitch came up to me like 5 minutes before and said the music sucks (this was at like 10:20) she wanted to hear more 80s rock and roll and metal music...I told her to piss off and go to Allston if thats what she wanted...so I was already a bit heated nevermind felt like ass...

I don't know why the DHDJ was there, but she got put in her place. She was running around acting liek she ran the joint. There was a line down the street and I guess she went outside trying to get her people in and ahead in the line. The main bouncer asked her wtf she was doing, guess she said "I work here so I can get my friends in" my boy said "no you don't work here, and your friends arent going anywhere"

As for me, thats all it was...after I said excuse me I kind of just ignored her until she just got the hint and left.

I had something like that happen to me once and that shit is mad embarassing, I was doing a show at my residency with 5 other local Djs and 2 more 'famous' (more nationally known but i def wouldnt say famous) djs. Well I dont know if the club hired extra security or if it was these ass wipes but they had this big king kong lookin ass hole blockin off a small area near the stage where the big name djs were. So im in the booth with my girl and some friends drinkin and im like hey come meet these guys their cool (the celeb djs who ive hung out with before and booked for this party). So i go to take her over there and this debo wanna be ass security gaurd grabs me and is like you cant go back there. I look at him like hes krazy im like dude I work here im on the flier this is my residency/my party i set this party up and these guys know me so back the fuck off. He stands up and is like i dont give a shit you cant go back there. Im thinking to myself you have to be fuking kidding me, so just as this happens the owner is walking by and im like tell this dude whats up, the owner tells him to back up off me and he starts giving the owner attitude. At this point im fukin pissed and i tell him that those are my tables they are going to be playing on tonight (it was all my equipment)and if he didnt get in his place i was gonna take them home and shut the whole fukin party down, and if the party dont happen aint noone gettin paid. So the dude goes fine you can go as long as i quit botherin him or something like that , which sets me off and i start gettin really fukin loud with him. It all cooled down after that (which was lucky for me cause he totally would have wooped my ass) but i was steamed for the rest of the night, it was embarrassing as shit in front of my girl and everything.

Bouncers with power are much worse than djs with power...when a dj gets power hes a dick but when the dj is bein a dick hes still gotta think in the back of his mind hey if i push this too far and he snaps can i take this guy...bouncers are usually big roided out sasquach lookin fuckers who think their tough anyway so when their get to have rules over you too it makes it THAT much worse.

I found out later that bouncer from the club that night was the bouncer at another club in the city and while my boy was djing there something happend (i forget the full story it was either the bouncer requested a song and my boy clowned him or the bouncer told him the owner said to cut the music and my boy wanted to throw 1 more song) either way the end of the story ended with my boy gettin choked out. He was the fukin dj there and this punk ass bouncer choked him out durring a set. What makes matters worse is when he went to the owner the owner didnt want to do anything about it.....that was the night my boy quit that job and that place has been downhill ever since (him and the owner had been having problems anyway).

Lol that and as a DJ you usually have that thought that if it all kicks off then my gear is in the front line.

Bouncers have really had to tow the line over here as they changed alot of the laws over the years meaning people who were absolute nut jobs that LOVED their jobs are no longer allowed to bounce. Lol Still undecided on whether that is a good thing or not.

I have seen it a few times already, I kow a chic not gonna say a name but she is actually a good DJ and can spin vinyl... But the girl sky rocketed and is doing some pretty fudging big gigs around the world, we pretty close and she uses her sexual appeal as her biggest marketing tool... shit if I had a set of cooters and a fat ass I would be spinning right next to Scene and AM right now. I AM ONE VERY IRRITATED DJ.... I HATE UNDERCUTTERZ AND FEMALE DJS TOO!!! Well unless the broad can actually rock the tables on the legit, the she is just a cool ass chick!!! At least your friend can spin, you really cant hate on a talented female who uses what she has to get gigs, i know if i had the body of someone who didnt sit on his ass all day and female club owners wanted to pay me more to do big shows with no shirt on id totally do it.

I asked the owner what was going on cuz I came down specificially to see them and he said, "we wanted to watch the games rather then listen to the same planned out setlist of song we hear every week" then commenced to show me how they dance. Dudes like 45-50, so it was hilarious...

ease up on Drea, I would like to get thier opinion on the matter. Lets say your a photographer, you spent years learning how to take the perfect picture, capture a moment with out words, and then a bunch of DJ's just said, hey, that looks easy, went out and bought the cheapest camera they could find at Best Buy, and then went and sold their service as the "Best In Boston". Now don't you expect the professional photographers in Boston, who spent years working their way up, to take offense to this? Also, instead of charging appropriately, they undercharge to win the business? So who wins? certainly not the Pro's and certainly not the people who hire them? Seems kind of one way?

In the end we are all in the entertainment industry and we are here to work in it and bars hire people to bring in the business. So you look on how to improve your business model.

By finding better and better way to illegally download music?? new cool dance moves? cuz from what I have seen thats pretty much the only thing they can improve on...or maybe their looks as well, cuz every single one of them is god awfully busted...

They don't use turntables, or cdjs, or dual CD players...they use a LAPTOP ONLY. The dont mix, they dont even slam, they fade songs into one another or use auto mixing, or pre recorded mixes...in what way can they improve themselves? please enlighten us...

Maybe if you actually put them as DJ's first, instead of dolled up go go dances, maybe your "business model" would be a little more effective and you wouldnt only get hired to play in sports bars where the main % of clients are drunk old men and guys who havent been laid in 3 years...

You want respect from people in the industry other then bar owners then make them DJs. Make them take it seriously and put in the work we all have. Put them on turntables, or CDJs...and actually be DJS, not glorified jukeboxes...

I agree, any press is good press, but not to the detriment of the craft. Most DJ's do not get into this because we think its going to lead to Fame and Wealth. Just my perspective, if I wanted $$, i could find better ways to spend my time. There is a learning curve to being a DJ, and alot of time and effort to hone the abilities and do it right. Whether or not it matters is a whole nother argument, but this is something very different from being a bartender. There is no instruction manual to this, its something that many of us had to either learn on our own, or it was knowledge passed down. That time and knowledge is a valuable commidity, and it has a legacy. If they want to be DJ's by all means do it, but do it right. Learn it, spend the $$. There is no business that you can just walk right up and say, Alright I'm here, pay me. I'm sure its similar to photography, someone doesn't just wake up one day go out, buy any old camera and then start offering their services to the public. Many do, but few ever suceed and reach a professional level.

Your right to some degree about the need to innovate, and I think many dj's do. But what makes it more difficult is many owners, promoters, etc, can't sift through the bullshit. Its not just the DHDJ's fault, the industry as a whole has no soul. Everybody is out for the $$ by putting out the least amout of product, there is no quality to shows anymore. I'm all for these ladies learning how to do this right, but I won't stand for anyone getting a pass on putting out a sub quality product. Yeah, people may think its a novel idea, but those who know won't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I am looking to run a good business model. BKS I agree with you that there is a lot to work through with BS, I am actually very careful about where i put them and I work with them. As someone mentioned in an earlier portion of the thread more and more programs are making it easier for people to learn.(Just like digital has made the camera less mystifying for the un-informed). As for the teaching them its funny we have been hiring djs to show them how to work. We are willing to spend the $$$ but I am also not going to fault the fact that audiences respond to the girls and bars like them. This is entertainment in the end.

Why do bars/clubs hire good-looking bartenders? Why do they hire certain people to hostess or waitress? etc... etc.... This is about personality, this is about adding innovation, doing different things.

For those that are in the know they know its about the entertainment and the business.

BKS since you are boston local I will be more than happy to sit down and talk with you. You know where to find me. Come in and grab a drink on me.

so, I just talked to the DJ at The Banana.
because I wanted to be sure I was accurate.
It was infact the DHDjs...maybe just one.
"fucking horrendus" was the direct quote.

so, at the end of the day the outright misdirection of the tagline:
"we've trained our dancers to be DJs"
could be considered outright flase

fact is, they have been trained to open a computer, maybe pick a tracklist.
this is no lie:
My 5 yr old daughter uses Virtual DJ on the house computer.
she knows how to drag songs, click sync & automix...and then she dances around.

would I ever think to tell anyone that I trained my lil gal how to dj?
no, that would be a lie.

to club owners, who dont know better... they arent gonna check.
they just buy the idea, sure... they SAID they trained em.

enter: the golden banana. calling oneself a dj walks in and takes the gig.
finds out the hard way, especially in a room where people depend on your
DJ/Mic skills to pay their rent, that you have NO IDEA what your doing.
being 1/2 naked ang being hot in a room full of hotter neked women really
puts your abilities on the platter for scrutiny.
I too, found out the hard way, dj'ing a strip club is not as easy as you'd think.

Im all for making money.
and theres NO DENYING that this is a very marketable product, especially in
a sports/college town.
I think us (the djs) would agree its not the idea that its happening.
shit, wavies call them self djs all the time.
but, they really havent drifted from their target market. (which is either blind luck, or some great placement management)
bruins & celtics games every thursday til the summer, greatest bar?
Its perfect for them.
I dont think any of us are trying to get in the place, or any of those places.

its just a shot to the chops when anyone becomes in instant ____________ becuase
of some T&a...we have all fallen victim to it.
me personally, If I was an owner... Id have my new hot bartender with zero experience working mon-thrs days til they REALLY learn.

Ive taught plenty of people the basics, and more advance side of DJ'ing
and while my affiliation with the djmixacademy.com is a bit "looser" now
we still offer classes. I wrote alot of the cirriculum and reccomend learning
the proper way.

my idea from...weeks ago.
why not have 2 or 3 REAL hardworking female djs, and have the other girls
dance, and learn from them on the fly? theres about a dozen here in boston.
none of them are trolls, nothing some makeup and a pushup bra cant fix.

and for the sake of all djs, shitty, biters, great, wavie.
do not undercut others, or undersell yourself.
thats just bad ethics.

But maybe something that respect for themselves and the art form might prevent them from doing.

Like Josh said, I'm not feeling super threatened by this, I'm out after a different market, but at the sametime, I can see the holes in this. Its fine if your catering to a niche market, but the minute you try and legitamally enter a differnt venue, your barking up someone elses tree, and that tree could fall on you.

Like I've said before, your a business man, its a great idea, but let it grow. like Josh said, maybe learn the girls a little more. I know from where I work and the people I work with, The DHDJ's are considered like a side show, not a main event. I think the issue many on this forum have with this, is we view this as a dilution of the profession. But all it would take is a little time, let them learn the ins and outs and have at it. I have no qualms about the DJ bredren here, who I repsect going out and getting gigs. We all bump stuff off one another. Work with us, not against us.

Cool BKS. I agree with what your saying about the photographers but it still happens its up to the photographers themselves to improve themselves and start someplace. All of us who work in the industry have had experiences with new bartenders but they do get beeter. It takes TIME to learn but some bartenders still get hired. In the end we are all in the entertainment industry and we are here to work in it and bars hire people to bring in the business. So you look on how to improve your business model.

Encouraging discussion is a great way to create business

To make this analagy more appropriate with whats happening, it would be like hiring a bartender who dosent know how to mix drinks but instead of learning to mix drinks he puts a vending machine behind the bar full of soda (no liquor) and sits in front of the bar half nakes talking to customers. Sure the people who are flirting with the bartender are enjoying themselves but what about all the poor bastards who are there to get drunk and have fun!!?!

The prob is if their not even attempting to mix your loqering the standard. When audiences who dont know any better go and hear shitty mixing and prerecorded shit then you have tons on wannabee djs who go i can play that and now the clubs are full of undertrained wannabee djs who suck just because their cheap and look good. When you have a market perputuated by undercutters than lowers the standard rate so a dj who knows what hes doing appears to be charging an astronomical fee.

They arent DJ's they are whorified jukeboxes...

Thanks for addressing my question by the way Drea..about teaching them to learn on real equipment...guess your just as "not serious" about it as they are...

I DJ some of the bigger clubs in Boston (Mantra, Saint, soon to be Venu) and also one of the places the DHDJs are at..we have a line 250 people deep on nights where we don't have celtics or bruins games to bring people in...

why? cuz we promote and actually have a "good business model"...we know how to get people in based off what we offer as far as great service and great music (having a DJ ie myself) who has put in endless time and effort perfecting my skills and knowing what it takes to keep a crowd happy...I dont need to take my shirt off and dance around to keep people entertained...

thats what your missing...imagine if these girls could acually DJ..rather then just dance around and "entertain",,,you'd be able to get into clubs not just sports bars.... why call them DJs? Why not DOllhouse Dancers? Does the word DJ automatically give them instant glorification? It jsut makes everyone who already thinks DJ's who use computers suck, an even worse look.

whoa... i'm late to this thread but it was an interesting read.

my take on it is that i see no reason to be a hater. they're not gonna affect me (not only in a different market, but in a different continent!) and there's plenty of TERRIBLE djs who don't happen to be women in skimpy clothing who are just as deserving of criticism on the DJing front - but rather than spend time criticizing them i'd rather put that energy into improving my own abilities.

i see the DHDJs as entertainers, and that much is definitely true - but whether they call themselves DJs, dancers, or astronauts, people will either be entertained (so no harm no foul), or leave and not come back. they're not Qbert but they never said they were. hell, a magician doesn't REALLY saw the woman in half, but you're still entertained, right? well if you wanna go some place where there's music and beer and pretty women with not much on, and you've never heard of scribbles and baby scratches - and let's face it, that's MOST people who go to bars each night - this'll be good enough. if you DO have more discerning expectations, there's other options.

those of us who have been DJing for decades can get quite protective of what we do, cos we're proud of the skills we've developed. the truth how important those skills are is pretty subjective - no one is gonna DIE if we trainwreck, which is why airplane pilots and brain surgeons need to be qualified and DJs don't. it's just our careers that live or die, and that's mostly tied into how much money goes into the tills at the front door and behind the bar. if being female and wearing a bra while you work keeps the money ticking over, so be it - i'm not gonna COPY that business model, but i'll work all the harder to ensure my tunes selection, beat-matching and so on keeps customers having a fucking awesome night, and coming back and spending money. THAT's what will keep me in my nightly slots, not trash-talking the women showing their pants and playing premixed music in the venue down the street.
